Umhlanga Launch Caps

For a coastal promotional launch team in Umhlanga, we produced branded caps that could handle sun, salt air and busy event days. The brief called for clean front-panel printing, consistent colour and a finish that looked sharp in person and in photos.

Umhlanga Launch Caps

Brief for a coastal launch team in Umhlanga

The client was a promotional launch team based in Umhlanga, supporting a high-traffic beachfront activation with staff moving between the promenade, vehicles and temporary display points. They needed caps that could be issued in a single batch, worn outdoors for long shifts, and still keep the logo easy to read from a few metres away. The cap style had to look neat with casual uniforms and cope with repeated use over the full campaign period.

Because the launch sat close to the sea, the brief also came with practical concerns: heat, humidity and the kind of wind that can catch on light headwear. The team wanted something simple and presentable, with no fuss on site and no complicated sizing. We worked from their supplied artwork and cleaned up the print setup so the final caps would be consistent across the batch.

Artwork, colour and production checks

Before production, our artwork team checked the logo for print suitability and made sure the front-panel layout would sit cleanly on the cap front. If needed, we redrew the artwork into vector format, separated colours and prepared the film output for screen work. That step matters on smaller branding areas because even a small distortion can make text look heavy or uneven once printed.

  • Artwork checking for print readiness and legibility
  • Vector redrawing where supplied files needed cleanup
  • Colour separation for accurate screen setup
  • Film output for the stencil stage
  • Test print to confirm placement and ink coverage

We kept the logo placement central and level, with enough clear space around the mark so it would not crowd the seam lines on the cap front. It sounds minor, but on a curved surface a millimetre or two off can throw the whole row off balance and look untidy in a group photo.

In-house screen making for the cap run

Screen Spectrum handled the stencil and screen making in-house at our Umbilo base in Durban. That let us control the full setup, from film and screen exposure through to washout, touch-up and registration. For this project we produced the screens ourselves, then checked them before ink went on fabric, which kept the job moving without waiting on outside suppliers.

The cap run was a medium promotional order, not a one-off sample. We used our screen storage and reclaiming process to keep the setup organised and ready for repeat use during the project window. For a launch that may need top-up stock later, this is useful because the same print can be repeated without rebuilding the artwork from scratch.

  • Screen stretching and emulsion coating on site
  • Screen exposure, washout and touch-up completed in house
  • Screen registration checked before production started
  • Screen storage kept the job ready for reorders

Printing details and final finish

The caps were printed on the front panel only, using a clean single-position layout that kept the branding visible without overloading the product. The final finish was chosen to suit a coastal event setting, where light reflects strongly and anything too busy can get lost. We focused on crisp edges, even ink laydown and a result that would look good both up close and at a distance.

Because caps are curved and often handled quickly by staff, our production team watched for ink placement and pressure consistency throughout the run. Anele Zungu oversaw production, Yusuf Khan led screen making, and Priya Naidoo handled the artwork checks so the batch stayed uniform from first cap to last. That co-ordination is what keeps a practical promo order on track, especially when the client needs every unit to match.

Timeline, delivery and launch-day use

The full project ran over 2 weeks from artwork check to dispatch. The first stage covered artwork cleanup and screen preparation, then production followed once the print positions were confirmed. Once completed, Lwazi Khumalo arranged dispatch from Umbilo, with courier delivery available nationwide and local delivery coverage for Durban areas including Umhlanga, Durban Central, Berea, Pinetown, Westville, Amanzimtoti, Ballito and Pietermaritzburg.

The client received the caps in time for the launch and used them for staff who needed a neat, repeatable look across several days. The final delivery plan had to fit around Durban traffic and a tight event calendar, so it helped that the order was finished in a single production cycle rather than split across multiple drops.

  • Project duration: 2 weeks
  • Dispatch from Umbilo, Durban
  • Courier delivery nationwide available
  • Local delivery support for KZN business areas

Results and what we would repeat

The finished caps gave the team a tidy, consistent branded look that suited a coastal launch setting and held up well through regular wear. The client wanted something practical more than flashy, and that is exactly where a screen printed cap works well. The front-panel branding stayed clear, the batch matched across sizes, and the order was easy to issue to staff without sorting problems on site.

If we were repeating this project, we would keep the same process: tighten the artwork early, confirm print placement with a test sample, and allow enough time for screen prep before the main run. That approach gives the best result when you are working with outdoor promotional gear in humid conditions, where small setup errors can show up faster than you expect.
